Fixing Vaultwarden and Bitwarden Sync Errors: A Complete Upgrade & Migration Guide

If you use Vaultwarden alongside modern Bitwarden browser extensions, you may have recently encountered a frustrating sync issue. Following recent client updates, attempting to sync your vault often triggers cryptic WebAssembly errors or leaves your extension completely blank while your web vault interface continues to work fine.

The culprit? A breaking schema change introduced in Bitwarden extension version 2026.7.0+ that outpaces older Vaultwarden backends (specifically version 1.36.0 and earlier).

This guide walks you through diagnosing the issue, securely backing up your VPS instance, and upgrading Vaultwarden using standalone Docker commands to restore full compatibility.

Understanding the Error

When mismatched versions collide, the Bitwarden extension's Rust-based WASM parser panics during cryptographic deserialization:

Unhandled error in angular Error: Error: invalid type: JsValue(Object(...)), expected a string

Attempting to fix this by importing JSON or CSV exports often fails because modern client extensions strictly validate cryptographic payload schemas. The ultimate fix is straightforward: bring your self-hosted Vaultwarden backend up to version 1.37.1 or higher.

Step-by-Step Upgrade Guide

Execute these commands directly on your VPS terminal to safely back up, update, and relaunch your Vaultwarden container.

Step 1: Verify Your Data Mount Location

Before modifying any containers, confirm the exact absolute path on your host machine mapped to the container's internal /data directory:

docker inspect vaultwarden --format '{{range .Mounts}}{{if eq .Destination "/data"}}{{.Source}}{{end}}{{end}}'

In our standard deployment example, this maps to /vw-data.

Step 2: Create a Timestamped Backup

Never perform container upgrades or migrations without a recent snapshot. Duplicate your data folder into your home directory (replace ${USER} with your actual VPS username):

sudo cp -r /vw-data /home/${USER}/vw-data_backup_$(date +%F_%H%M%S)

Step 3: Check the Latest Release Version

Query the GitHub API to verify the target release version you are upgrading toward:

curl -s https://api.github.com/repos/dani-garcia/vaultwarden/releases/latest | grep '"tag_name":' | sed -E 's/.*"([^"]+)".*/\1/'

This should output 1.37.1 or newer.

Step 4: Pull the Latest Docker Image

Download the latest upstream Vaultwarden server image to your host:

docker pull vaultwarden/server:latest

Step 5 & 6: Stop and Remove the Old Container

Stop your running container and remove its metadata. (Note: Removing the container does not touch your persistent host data directory at /vw-data):

docker stop vaultwarden
docker rm vaultwarden

Step 7: Launch the Upgraded Container

Spin up the new container version. Make sure to substitute https://HOST_URL with your actual domain name and adjust the port mapping (127.0.0.1:8800:80) if your reverse proxy configuration uses a different port:

docker run --detach \
  --name vaultwarden \
  --env DOMAIN=https://HOST_URL \
  --volume /vw-data/:/data/ \
  --restart unless-stopped \
  --publish 127.0.0.1:8800:80 \
  vaultwarden/server:latest

Step 8: Verify the Installation

Confirm that the upgrade succeeded by printing the running binary's version string directly from inside the container:

docker exec -it vaultwarden /vaultwarden --version

Expected output confirmation:

Vaultwarden 1.37.1

Finalizing Your Client Connection

Once your backend container is running version 1.37.1+, complete these quick client steps:

  1. Ensure your browser extension is updated to the latest version.
  2. Open the extension popup, navigate to Settings → Account → Log out, and log back in.

Pro-Tip: Logging out and back in forces the extension to clear its local IndexedDB state and complete a fresh cryptographic handshake with your updated server, resolving sync errors permanently.

Summary

  • Cause: Breaking cryptographic schema in Bitwarden extension 2026.7.0+ incompatible with Vaultwarden < 1.37.1.
  • Fix: Pull vaultwarden/server:latest, recreate the container attached to /vw-data, and re-login to your client extension.
